The development objective of the North Eastern Region Power System Improvement Project for India is to improve the availability of electricity supply through expansion and reinforcement of power systems in the participating states in the North Eastern region. Some of the negative impacts and mitigation measures include: (1) ensuring careful route selection to avoid existing settlements and sensitive locations; (2) avoiding siting into such areas by careful site and alignment selection (national parks, wildlife sanctuary, biosphere reserves, and biodiversity hotspots); (3) avoiding siting of line by careful site and alignment selection; (4) using existing tower or footings wherever possible; (5) designing of substations to include modern firefighting equipment; and (6) avoiding dumping of fill materials in sensitive drainage area.
