Lao People's Democratic Republic - Second Poverty Reduction Fund Project : environmental assessment (Vol. 2) : Pest management plan (英语)

The objective of the Second Poverty Reduction Fund Project (PRF II) is to improve the access to and the utilization of basic economic and social infrastructure and services for communities in PRF II targeted poverty locations through processes of inclusive community and local development planning, implementation, and monitoring. Negative impacts include: water quality, soil erosion, water logging of soils, salinization of soils, clogging of canals by sediment. Disease and health problems from use of wastewater irrigation, and over-pumping of groundwater. Mitigation measures include: 1) proper design and layout of furrows or field avoiding too steep a gradient and maintain vegetation cover; 2) regulation of water application to avoid over-watering; 3) leaching of salts by flushing soils periodically; 4) design of canal system to minimize risk; 5) establishment and enforcement standards for wastewater use; 6) control of land use in watershed areas and control of pollution sources; and 7) check of dam or reservoir safety prior to subproject implementation.
