The Sustainable Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Project of Nicaragua will focus on improving sustainable coverage of water supply and sanitation in the poorest regions of the country, including indigenous and Afro-Nicaraguan communities. Therefore, the Operational Policy 4.10 on Indigenous Peoples will activate each indigenous or afro Nicaragua to share the benefits of the project. The Project Development Objectives are: (a) Improve access to sustainable services drinking water and sanitation in selected poor areas, through the consolidation of institutions of the Water and Sanitation sector and the provision of adequate infrastructure, and (b) Improve the capacity of Nicaragua to respond quickly and effectively to eligible emergencies under the Project. Some positive impacts are: (a) Improvement of the living conditions of indigenous peoples by providing (i) potable water up to their place of residence, thus avoiding carrying water particularly by women and children; (ii) basic sanitation systems in their homes including toilet and sink, to improve hygiene and prevent family from having diarrhea and gastrointestinal diseases; (iii) training not only in terms of entities of municipal and community, but for all people in the community including men, women and children for the rational use of water and care systems. Potential negative impacts strike on indigenous peoples and Afro-Nicaraguans and could occur by not complying with agreements of this Policy Framework and agreements of Framework Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF) project.
