The main objective of the Central Africa Backbone CAB5 project of the Democratic Republic of Congo is to contribute to the effective increase of regional connectivity. The project will support the deployment of missing links in the national fiber optic network to connect disparate economic centers in Kinshasa (west), Goma (East) and Lubumbashi (south). By linking the three economic centers, the new network will allow telecom operators the possibility of providing integrated nationwide services. The project will also support the commercialization of new capacity through a public-private partnership (PPP). The negative environmental and social impacts of the project will come mainly from the work phase (laying of the fiber with the excavations at the crossing of the towns and villages, forest and agricultural areas, etc.). At this stage of the study, the sharp lines and structures of implantation sites are not yet known. However, at the crossing of settlements, excavations could cause disruption of socio-economic activities within the right of way (shops, various garages and workshops) in the rural areas. Risks relate primarily to the crossing of protected areas, trees cuts and encroachment on agricultural land. However, given the project areas and the nature of work under the CAB5, the expected negative impacts should not have a massive negative impact and irreversible environmental and social terms. Disturbance of natural habitats and reduction of vegetation cover, erosion risks, disturbance and deterioration of living conditions at work and impact on Natural habitats are some of the specific negative impacts of the project.
